Students at HSES have embraced Beanstack, the new reading motivational program in Douglas County Schools! Students have met the community reading goal of 50,000 minutes in less than a month. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Polar Patrol will make a stop to reward students for their reading in the next few weeks and Hawks will have a higher community goal to reach. Students also have individual reading goals. 4th Grade student China O. says, “I really like earning badges when I log my minutes. I like to be able to see my achievements. In the future, I can always look back and remember all the books I have tracked in Beanstack.” Her 4th Grade teacher, Dr. Ashley Lindeman said, “Beanstack adds a layer of friendly competition. Students look at what their friends are reading and at the leaderboards and it encourages them to read more”. Students who meet their goal of reading and logging 750 minutes every nine weeks will earn different rewards or a party invitation to celebrate meeting their individual reading goal. Also, at the end of each month the Top Readers, Classes, Staff Members and Grades will be recognized for logging the most minutes read with a special reward from the Media Center. Mrs. Harbin, the Media Specialist, encourages Hawks to read anytime, anywhere and log their minutes with the app. Media Clerk, Mrs. Nancy Tucker, asks students when checking in and out books if they have logged their minutes in Beanstack to help encourage students to keep reading!
